  6. 1. What is I-Comm ?

  8.    I-Comm is a full feature graphical WWW browser which does 
  9.    not require any kind of SLIP/PPP connections. If you have a 
  10.    PC with Windows, a modem and an Internet shell account, then 
  11.    you are ready to surf the Internet using I-Comm.  No fancy 
  12.    setup needed.  
  13.  
  14.    I-Comm has a "Mosaic look & feel" interface and can display 
  15.    pages while background downloading images.  I-Comm also has 
  16.    a built-in full feature modem communication program which 
  17.    allows user to switch between a modem communication program 
  18.    and browser by one button click.

  20.    I-Comm is a shareware.

  23. 2. What is I-Comm's minimum system requirements ?

  25.    a. 386DX running MS-Windows (tm) 3.1 or above with 4MB Memory

  64. 4. How to install I-Comm using I-Comm ZIP file?

  66.    a. Create a TEMP directory on your hard disk, unzip (pkunzip)
  67.       the I-Comm ZIP file under that directory; 
  68.    b. Start MS-Windows;
  69.    c. Click on the File menu of your Windows Program Manager;
  70.    d. Select Run, then type C:\TEMP\SETUP (or D:\TEMP\SETUP) and 
  71.       press OK.

  74. 5. How to run I-Comm ?
  75.  
  76.    a. Click on the File menu of your Windows Program Manager;
  77.    b. Select Run, then type C:\I-COMM\BIN\I-COMM and press OK.

  79.    *  You also can create an icon for I-Comm by click on File
  80.       menu of your Windows Program Manager, and select new.

  83. 6. What is "icomhost" ?
  84.  
  85.    "icomhost" is the Internet World Wide Web service program 
  86.    for I-Comm.  If you don't have Lynx or WWW installed, you 
  87.    need place it in your Internet Shell account search path, 
  88.    before using I-Comm to surf the Internet.

  91. 7. If I don't have "icomhost" installed in my shell account,
  92.    can I still use I-Comm ?
  93.  
  94.    Yes, if you have Lynx or WWW installed in your shell
  95.    account, you can use I-Comm with Lynx or WWW.

  98. 8. Where can I obtain "icomhost" ?
  99.  
  100.    Currently, we have icomhost for Sun4, HP, BSDI, Linux, 
  101.    SCO, Unix System V for IBM PC, IBM AIX RS6000, DEC OSF/1 
  102.    and DEC Station ULTRIX V4.2A. If you are using other 
  103.    platforms, please let us know, we will try to port it for 
  104.    you.

  154. 9. How to install "icomhost" ?
  155.  
  156.    a. Download "icomhost.gz" to your Internet shell account;
  157.    b. Type "gzip -d icomhost.gz" in your Internet shell account;
  158.    c. Use "chmod 700 icomhost" to make "icomhost" Executable;
  159.    d. Place it in your shell account search path;
  160.    e. Type "icomhost -t" at the command line.  
  161.       If it can download the "icomtest.htm" file properly, 
  162.       that means you have installed "icomhost" program successfully.

  165. 10. After I started I-Comm, how can I connect to Internet ?
  166.  
  167.    STOP: you have to installed Z-modem program "sz", and one
  168.          of following programs: icomhost, lynx or www before you
  169.          using I-Comm to connect to Internet.
  170.  
  171.    a. Click on the Communication menu of I-Comm program;
  172.       Select Com Port Setup, select the correct modem port and
  173.       its setup;
  174.    b. Click on the Communication menu of I-Comm program again;
  175.       Select Phone Book or Manual Dial, connect to your Internet
  176.       provider, use the terminal window in I-Comm to login your
  177.       account;
  178.    c. After login, click on the "Browser" button to bring the HTML 
  179.       window to the front;
  180.       (Note: you cannot close the Terminal window, but you can icon
  181.        it)
  182.    d. Click on the Communication menu, select Internet Host Program
  183.       choose the host program(icomhost, lyxn or www) you have 
  184.       installed in your shell account.  You only need to do this
  185.       once, ignore this step if you already set it up.
  186.    e. Now you are ready to do Internet Surfing by click on the 
  187.       text which is underlined.

  190. 11. How can I switch to I-Comm Terminal window from the Browser
  191.     Window ? Or switch to the Browser window from the Terminal
  192.     Window ?
  193.  
  194.     When you are in I-Comm browser window, click on the "Terminal"
  195.     button to switch to the Terminal window.
  196.     When you are in I-Comm Terminal window, click on the "Browser"
  197.     button to switch to the browser window.

  200. 12. Can I use I-Comm with a direct serial line connection ?
  201.  
  202.     Yes.  Select "Communication --> Com Port Setup" menu, setup
  203.     the com port(at same time, the program will also open the
  204.     port for you), then you are ready to surf the net.
  205.     In case you want to send any command through the serial line,
  206.     you can switch to the I-Comm Terminal Window, type the command
  207.     directly.

  210. 13. How can I STOP a file transfer process ?
  211.  
  212.     While I-Comm is downloading a file from Internet, you can click
  213.     on the "STOP" button to cancel the "remaining file" transfer,
  214.     and click on the "cancel" button of the file transfer dialog
  215.     to stop the current file transfer.
  216.

  218. 14. Does I-Comm save the visited Web pages on my local disk, so I 
  219.     can look at it again later on ?
  220.  
  221.     Yes.  I-Comm saves all the downloaded pages in the cache
  222.     directory.  Turn on the "Use Local Cache File" flag, click on the
  223.     links which you already downloaded, I-Comm will automatically
  224.     load the page from your local disk.
  225.  
  226.     If you want to update the current page, just click on the "Reload"
  227.     button, I-Comm will retrieve that page for you from the Internet.
  228.  
  229.     If you want to clean all/some of the cache files, you can select
  230.     "Options --> Clean Local Cache Files" menu.
  231.  
  232.     There is also a file named "index" in the cache directory which 
  233.     contains the HTTP address and local file name mapping.
  234.  
  235.     You also can save Web pages with images to other places on your
  236.     hard disk.  For detail, see question #21.

  239. 15. Can I edit the current HTML file in I-Comm ?
  240.  
  241.     Yes.  Select "File --> Edit HTML Source" menu, I-Comm will let you to
  242.     use Windows Notepad to edit the current HTML file.  After finishing
  243.     editing, you can click on the "Reload" button to see what it looks like.

  246. 16. How can I setup my external viewer programs for GIF, MOV, etc ?
  247.  
  248.     Select "File --> Edit Configure File" menu will allow you to use
  249.     Windows Notepad to change the I-Comm configuration file.  A
  250.     simple of the configuration file (i-comm.ini) is included with
  251.     this distribution.

  254. 17. Can I use I-Comm to download a list of files in batch mode ?
  255.  
  256.     Yes.  Select "File --> Batch Download" menu, I-Comm will pop-up
  257.     a batch download dialog box.  You can use the "Right" mouse button
  258.     click on the hyper link to add it into the batch download list.

  261. 18. How can I use I-Comm with "lynx" or "www" instead of icomhost
  262.     program as my Internet Host Program ?
  263.  
  264.     Select "Communication --> Internet Host Program --> Use Lynx" or
  265.     "Communication --> Internet Host Program --> Use www" to setup 
  266.     I-Comm to work with "lynx" or "www".

  269. 19. How to setup my own home page ?

  271.     Select "File --> Setup Homepage" menu, in the file dialog,
  272.     select the HTML file you want to use as home page.

  275. 20. Can I have more than one hot list files in I-Comm ?

  277.     Yes, you can have unlimited number of hot list files in I-Comm.
  278.     Please use "File --> Setup Hot List File" menu to select the
  279.     hot list file you want to use.  It is a good idea to have 
  280.     different hot list files for information belongs to different
  281.     categories.

  284. 21. How to edit the current hot list file ?
  285.  
  286.     Use "File --> Edit Hot List File" menu, I-Comm will let you
  287.     use Notepad to edit the current hot list file, please keep
  288.     at least two words per line while you are editing the file.

  291. 22. How to save a HTML page to disk WITH IMAGES in I-Comm, and view 
  292.     it later using I-Comm or other browser ?
  293.  
  294.     Use "File --> Save As HTML" menu, it is as easy as save a file.

  297. 23. How to save a HTML page as a plain text file in I-Comm ?
  298.  
  299.     Use "File --> Save As ASCII" menu.

  302. 24. What should I do if the "dial dialog" always showing "dialing"
  303.     message, does not connect ?
  304.  
  305.     This is because I-Comm did not catch the "CONNECT" string.
  306.     Select "Communication --> Dial Setup" menu, in the "Connect 
  307.     String" field, enter "C"(or "c"), or change it to the connect 
  308.     string specified in your modem manual.
  309.  
  310.     If this still does not work, try following:
  311.       . Select "Communication --> Com Port Setup" to open the port;
  312.       . Click on the "Terminal" button to switch to Terminal window;
  313.       . Type "atdt <phone number>" in the Terminal to dial out.

  316. 25. What should I do if I-Comm cannot retrieve any page from the
  317.     Internet, showing "waiting response from http server" message ?
  318.  
  319.     Please check the selection under "Communication --> Internet
  320.     Host Program" menu, make sure you selected the right Internet 
  321.     host program.  For example, if you have lynx installed in your 
  322.     shell account, you should select "Use Lynx".
  323.

  325. 26. What should I do if I-Comm cannot retrieve any page from the
  326.     Internet ?
  327.  
  328.     First, in your shell account, you have to have one of the 
  329.     following program:  
  330.           . icomhost from Talent Communications, Inc.
  331.           . OR lynx
  332.       . OR www
  333.  
  334.     Then you test one of these programs by downloading the page 
  335.     at:
  336.           http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm
  337.  
  338.     * If you have icomhost, the command you need to type in your
  339.       shell account is:
  340.       icomhost -a http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm -f icomm.htm
  341.       
  342.     * If you have lynx, the command you need to type in your
  343.       shell account is:
  344.       lynx http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm -source -dump > icomm.htm
  345.  
  346.     * If you have www, the command you need to type in your
  347.       shell account is:
  348.       www http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm -dump > icomm.htm

  350.     Make sure the program can download the "icomm.htm" file.
  351.  
  352.     In addition to the program mentioned above, you also need a
  353.     Z-modem file transfer program "sz".
  354.  
  355.     After you obtained the "sz" program, type "sz icomm.htm" in 
  356.     I-Comm Terminal, click on the "Download" button in I-Comm 
  357.     to download icomm.htm file.
  358.     Make sure I-Comm Terminal can received the file.

  361. 27. What should I do if I-Comm cannot retrieve inline images ?
  362.     ("Bad CRC" error)
  363.  
  364.     This is because the sz program is having some problems to
  365.     download binary files. Try to use "sz -be" in 
  366.     "Communication --> Host Program Setup Z-Modem Download Cmd." 
  367.     field, this will setup I-Comm to use "sz -be" to download 
  368.     files.  You can also use other "sz" options here.
  369.     It is a good idea to ask your sysAdmin what "sz" options are 
  370.     needed for Z-modem file downloading.
  371.

  373. 28. How to setup I-Comm to download all the files to a "tmp"
  374.     directory in my shell account ?
  375.  
  376.     This can be done in two ways:
  377.     a. change to directory "tmp" before switching to I-Comm
  378.        browser.
  379.     b. enter "cd tmp" in the "Command Prefix" field under
  380.        "Communication --> Host Program Setup".  This will setup
  381.        I-Comm to issue the "cd tmp" command every time before
  382.        it start to download a file from the Internet.
  383.  
  384.     * It is a good idea to setup I-Comm to download all the 
  385.       files to a "tmp" directory in your shell account.  Because
  386.       it makes the file cleanup easier in case something goes
  387.       wrong.

  390. 29. How to setup I-Comm to set the "rm" alias back after each
  391.     file download ?
  392.  
  393.     Enter "alias rm 'rm -i'" in the "Command Suffix" field under
  394.     "Communication --> Host Program Setup".  This will setup
  395.     I-Comm to issue the "alias rm 'rm -i'" command every time
  396.     after it finishes downloading a file from the Internet.
  397.  
  398.     * Don't worry about this setting if you did not setup "rm"
  399.       alias in your shell account.
  400.

  402. 30. How to setup I-Comm to keep all the files downloaded to
  403.     my shell account ?
  404.  
  405.     Enter "ls" in the "File Remove Command" field under
  406.     "Communication --> Host Program Setup".  This will setup
  407.     I-Comm to keep all the files in your shell account.
  408.  
  409.     * Don't do this unless you really have a lot of disk
  410.       space in your shell account.
  411.

  413. 31. Why register I-Comm ?
  414.  
  415.     a. You get the FULL FEATURE "registered" version of the 
  416.        software in which the "registration" dialog will not pop 
  417.        up every time you start and exit the program
  418.     b. You will get free upgrades until I-Comm version 1.99.
  419.     c. Priority for adding new features to I-Comm.
  420.     d. It will support us continuously improving I-Comm.  We plan
  421.        to support HTML3 and Netscape tags before version 1.99.
